What happens to the land after mining? The Resource Rehabilitation Showcase was developed to highlight the variety of land use options that exist post-extraction. Some will likely surprise you… Like turning an old mine pit into a solar energy farm with pumped hydro-electric generator for on-demand renewable energy, or creating an artificial reef from an old oil and gas rig. In some cases, it’s not just about returning the land to the same (or better) state that existed before mining, but recognising the opportunity that the extraction site has created to make something even better.

The Resource Rehabilitation Showcase is an interactive web-based tour to explore a variety of real extraction sites, to see what some look like during operation, as well as what the rehabilitation of the site looks like. In the experience there are seven operations to explore and each site is paired with a conceptual 3D animated model that helps to explain the before and after states.

We were lucky to work on this project with the School of Mineral and Energy Resources Engineering at the University of New South Wales and Susan Filan from Australian Earth Science Education. The support from the resource companies helping us to tell their story was fantastic and we look forward to expanding the experience in the years to come.

“It was a pleasure working with James and the team at Vantage in creating the Rehabilitation Showcase. They put together a very appealing product with animated icons that summarise the point of each section. The final product exceeded our hopes!”
